SEO for Nonprofits

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

You’ve probably heard the term Search Engine Optimization, but can you explain it and more importantly do you know what to do about it? In short, SEO is the practice of optimizing your site to get ranked on search engines in order to be found by users. No doubt you have also heard of black hat SEO and other unsavory practices that may have left you with an unfavorable impression. But in reality, practicing straightforward SEO in a few simple steps is not only practical, but easy to do and will help with your goals. The main reason that you should optimize your site is so that Google can understand what keywords you want to rank for, leading those who would be interested in your site to find it. Makes sense right? This is especially straight forward for websites that are spreading awareness about a cause as opposed to  ecommerce sites.

Three tips to optimize your website:

1. URL – This is the number one thing that google is going to look up when ranking your page. The key words that are in your URL should be first in the page’s title, and also the highest up on the page.

2. Content – Make sure that you have 500 words per page, and that the copy  is clear and concise as well as keyword dense.

3. Link, Link, Link! – Make sure your internal linking, linking from page to page, is set up. Google likes when relevant content is linked to relevant content.

Unleash the Power of Your Network at Happy Hour!

Friday, October 8th, 2010

We would like thank all who attended our webinar, “Unleash the Power of Your Network at Happy Hour” on Thursday, October 7. We would also like to thank Lauren Wolfe at Higher Logic for putting together a Learning Series of webinars, and for letting Karma411′s John Murcott be one of the presenters!

John began by giving an overview of social networking terms such as Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, and how the difference between the two is that Web 2.0 is driven by interactivity on a website, and the integration of user-generated content. This concept coincides with the idea that today, rather than seeking professionals for advice or product reviews, people are turning to their peers and actual product users.

For those who aren’t familiar with the phrase ‘People to People Fundraising,’ John explained the meaning by saying how people are now taking advantage of their networks, and encouraging those people to then reach out to their networks – this is how a message spreads virally.

John went on to say how organizations have to optimize online tools by providing a platform for their donors to make a page, upload their own content, and invite their friends on the organization’s behalf. “Now the idea of collaboration has turned on its head,” said John. “Now it’s external.”

Karma411 + Ted Hart Webinar – Increase the Influence of Your Donors!

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

We would first like to thank all of those who attended our Webinar on Tuesday, September 28! Karma411′s John Murcott and Nonprofit Coach Ted Hart made excellent presentations on how social networking and people to people fundraising can pump-up your fundraising efforts!

Ted Hart kicked off the webinar by discussing the rapid growth in social networking, and went on to say how nonprofits should be taking a more integrated approach – combining fundraising with social networking. Ted highlighted the idea that nonprofits should be leveraging their key supporters online, and enabling them to campaign on the organizations behalf.

Ted also used his ‘Aunt Mable Effect’ example to emphasize the importance and effectiveness of people-to-people fundraising. The idea of this concept is that you are more likely to open an email event from your ‘Aunt Mable,’ or someone who is close to you, before opening an email from an organization. Taking this a step further, you are more likely to donate to an organization because your relative asked you to as opposed to if an organization asked. Finally, you are more likely to give a larger gift to an organization if your relative asked you, because there’s a chance she’ll see how much you gave!

John continued the presentation by explaining exactly what you can do on Karma411 and how you can leverage the relationships with the people who care about you to make the most of our fundraising tools. He also explained that there are four simple steps to fundraising success:

1. Create a Page

2. Email your Friends

3. Show Support Directly Through the Site

4. Track Reports and Donations with Tools on the Site

So, what are you waiting for? Join Karma411 today and show your support for your favorite nonprofit organization!
