How To Fundraise: Walkathon

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Starting to plan for a springtime walkathonKarma411 has the tools you need to launch a successful site to fundraise for your walkathon online!

Karma411′s walkathon campaign tools enable nonprofits to organize events entirely online. Supporters can manage their team or individual pages on the site in order to raise funds and awareness prior to the event date. The key to driving donations even higher is to turn your donors into fundraisers by having your walkers create fundraising pages and fundraise for you.  This will expose your cause to the networks of the people who care about you most. These new networks of people may not have heard of your cause or event until one of your supporters made that introduction.

Autism Speaks U is a great example of how Autism Speaks took advantage of online tools to streamline the registration process of an individual or a team, or to have students at major colleges and universities start their own walk/run. Autism Speaks U enables colleges and universities to host walk/runs to unite their campus and community in support of the millions affected by autism. Participating students can rally friends, family, co-workers, and faculty members to raise autism awareness and funds for autism speaks. The site encourages friendly competition with a leader board on the homepage that highlights top individual fundraisers, as well as top teams. Supporters have the ability to donate to or join a team from the site as well.

Give Thanks By Giving Back This Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and be grateful for all of the good things in your life, and to give back to those in your community who may not be as fortunate.

Here are a few great ways to give thanks by giving back this Thanksgiving!

  1. Share a meal – donate to meals on wheels, or contact your local food bank to find out how you can help in your area
  2. Visit the hospital – many people who are sick may be missing the excitement of the holidays, but volunteers can help may their day a little brighter!
  3. Spend more time with family
  4. Hold a food drive – ask your Thanksgiving Day guests to each bring a canned item that you can donate to your local food bank
  5. Send a care package to a soldier – send a care package to those who don’t have the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families through Treats for Troops

How to run a walkathon

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Walkathons (or any athons like dogwalkathons, bounceathons (bounce a ballathon), jump ropeathon) are a great, engaging way to raise the profile of a nonprofit, cause or charity.  And of course they also help meet the goal of raising money and carrying out your mission.

In addition to being a great way to meet your organization’s goals, walkathons also help build the community letting many groups and families come together to participate and they get people active.

Running a walkathon is easier than you think.  It just takes planning and some good tools in your box.  Here are some tips:

1 – Create teams. Many hands make light work.  Share the load by recruiting motivated volunteers and form teams for the work and for friendly competition during the event.  Be sure to designate a leader that can power through the details and planning.

2 – Get permits needed.  Yes the admin is important.  Consider insurance (often this is covered by your existing policy but check it first).

3 – Make it fun.  Think of running a party.  What do people like?  Likely the same things will help make a walkathon fun.  Balloons, good food, drink, music and to be super special add a clown, mascot or a contest honoring participants.

4 – Plan Ahead.  Any event goes better with planning.  Karma411 has great online communication and software tools that can be a great help for planning, getting people involved, tracking and showing off success.  A big part of success is setting goals.  With goals, you are more likely to hit your target and inspire others to meet the challenge.

5 – Publicize.  Publicity will help not only with turn out but it will help your cause.  Think of all avenues – radio, newspaper, TV (often they will be a sponsor), flyers, emails and of course online. Have a local singing or dancing group there to cheer your marathoners on and get more media attention.

6 – Network. Use your contacts and social media. Karma411 software provides great tools tapping  into the Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc for you and any people who sihn up. It also allows you to set up email campaigns and have virtual participants.

7 – Figure out the finances.  How much are you going to charge and how are you going to charge.  The easier you make it for people, the more likely they are to donate.  Karma411 has built in secure credit card processing , donation options and allows checks (even cash) that can be customized to any amount.

Walkathons (or any athons) tend to be more and more successful over time so plan on growing over years, and remember to make it fun!

How To: Make Donating Easier

Monday, October 10th, 2011

1. Instead of using an empty box for supporters fill out, set donation options. For example: $50 = Help a child feel safe (Education & Assistance Corporation used similar wording for donation options). Setting donation options makes it easier for a supporter to choose an amount, as well as attaches meaning to each donation level.

2. Don’t make registration necessary – if someone can’t attend an event, they should still have the option to click on a donate button.

3. Make sure your donation form is mobile-friendly – everyone is on the go. A mobile-friendly donation form is especially useful at events; you could set aside time to introduce the launch of your mobile-friendly site, and take supporters through the steps of how to make a donation.

4. Make sure a donate button is on your website’s homepage, and on the homepages for all of your event sites. Make your donate button stand out by rendering it a different color, or a brighter version of your site’s color scheme.

5. Keep it short! The longer the form, the less likely you will receive a donation.

North Shore Land Alliance: Coalition to Create Wakapek Preserve

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Help Save This Land Today!

The DeForest Williams property on Shore Road is one of the last remaining large tracts of open space in Cold Spring Harbor. If this 42 acre property were to be developed, it would change the view, and overall feel of Cold Spring Harbor. Development of this land could also result in negative impacts on water quality as well as jeopardize vital bird habitat. The North Shore Land Alliance believes that this property should be protected for the Cold Spring Harbor community as The Wawapek Preserve.

The North Shore Land Alliance and Cold Spring Harbor Civic Association believe that this entire property can be permanently preserved with financial support from the community, along with funds provided by the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County.

Here’s how YOU can help NSLA to create the Wawapek Preserve: 1. Visit karma411.com/wawapek, 2. Sign the Petition – all you have to do is click the green “Sign the Petition” button, enter your name and email, and you’re done! 3. Make a Donation – click on the green “Make a Donation” button, enter your name and email, type in your credit card information, and you’re done! 4. Tell a Friend – click on the green “Tell a Friend” button, fill in your name and email, and voila! you’re given a page from which you can send a message out to all of your email contacts, share the page, and promote the cause!

By taking these few, simple steps, you will help NSLA prevent a 15-lot subdivision development plan from being carried through. If the land is developed according to this plan, 12 additional single family homes would be constructed on the property, creating more crowding and impairing significant historic and environmental characteristics. Please help NSLA make the Wawapek Preserve a reality by signing up on the site today!
