Ways To Show Support During Mental Health Month

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Happy (almost) Mental Health Month! Since May is Mental Health Month, I thought it would be a good idea to make a post on the most effective ways to show support and spread the word. I think that we can all take a minute to think about how we can show our support – and if you think of your own creative way, please share!

Below, you’ll find a list of a few easy ways to celebrate Mental Health Month. Be sure to pass the information along to anyone who might find it useful!

  1. Mental Health America gives great suggestions on how to show support & spread the word. Share with your friends and networks using the hashtag #mentalhealthmonth on Twitter, and posting links to liveyourlifewell.org!
  2. Donate to CPC Behavioral Healthcare, and PSCH (Promoting Specialized Care and Health) to help fund all of their successful programs!
  3. Take Action Now! Choose one of many ways to take action on Mental Health America’s list of Action Alerts, such as: Contact Your House Member today. Tell Them to Vote Protect Mental Health Services
  4. If you know someone who needs help, visit Mental Health America’s online store for their Fact Sheets, Brochures, Teen Series, and sheets specifically dedicated for Mental Health Month.
  5. Create a Karma411 Campaign for Mental Health America! Create a campaign for this charity, or another charity of your choice, where you can share your own story, upload videos, create custom donation options, and then send it out to all of your friends and social networks!

EAC’s Annual Spring Luncheon

Friday, April 1st, 2011

On Wednesday, March 30 the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC) held their annual Spring Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York to help make a difference in the lives of victims of child abuse. With more than 600 attendees, this was a special opportunity to support EAC and to network with a diverse group of individuals.

Prior to the event, supporters could visit EAC’s Spring Luncheon Site to purchase tickets, buy a sponsorship, create a page, invite their friends, and share on Facebook and Twitter. All donations made will help child abuse victims at EAC’s Suffolk County Child Advocacy Center.

The first hour of the event was set aside for networking, purchasing raffle tickets for a wide array of gift baskets, and browsing & placing bids on items featured in a silent auction. The attendees moved to the ballroom for the second half of the Luncheon where guests ate while listening to speeches made by representatives from EAC, including CEO Lance Elder, and bid on items such as tickets to Lady Gada during a live auction.

Top 5 Sites for Nonprofit News

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

There are many sites that act as news resources for nonprofits on the internet. Different nonprofit news sites serve different purposes; some discuss upcoming nonprofit seminars and conferences, some talk about recent successful campaigns, and some highlight useful technology and social media sites. After sifting through a plethora of sites that concern nonprofits, I have narrowed it down to the top 5:

  1. Mashable.com – this site was founded in 2005, and is the top news source for news in social and digital media, technology and web culture. The site also has a Social Good section
  2. 501Connect – this site is relatively new, but will prove (in a short amount of time) to be a very useful resource for nonprofits of all sizes.
  3. Philanthropy Journal – this is an online publication of state, national and international news on fundraising, giving, managing, grant seeking, volunteering, and technology in the nonprofit arena.
  4. Nonprofit Technology News – this site is a top source for technology information and resources for nonprofit executives.
  5. The Chronicle of Philanthropy – this extensive site is a news source for charity leaders, fund raisers, grant makers, and others involved in philanthropic enterprises.

Oxfam America – Ending Hunger Starts Here

Oxfam's Interactive Photobook

Since yesterday was International Women’s Day, I spent a bit of time perusing the internet for sites that support the day, and allow supporters to contribute and interact. On Mashable.com I came across an article “How To: Support International Women’s Day Using Social Media,” which included a link to an organization I had until then been unfamiliar with: Oxfam America.

Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Together with individuals and local groups in more than 90 countries, Oxfam saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice.

So what does Oxfam America have to do with International Women’s Day? This year, people from all over the country teamed up with Oxfam America for the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day by becoming a Sister or Brother on the Planet; adding an image to Oxfam’s interactive photobook; and by signing up for one of over 100 community events taking place in the month of March. Visit their site to join the movement and participate in one or more of their initiatives to fight hunger and invest in women!
