Connect: Get to know Groups

Groups allow you to organize Members around a shared interest or cause. Once organized, you can do a lot of cool things, such as hold discussions, take polls, and create events. For example, say you're passionate about dogs and you want to interact with fellow dog lovers on Karma411. You can create a Group (let's call it Dog Power), invite other Members to join, and start some discussions. You can then poll the Group, asking what doggy issues keep them up at night, and then create an Event around the top-rated issue. Before you know it, you'll have a pack of enthusiastic people itching to start a dog rescue.

How do I create a Group?

  1. Click on your "Groups" tab and then the link "Create new Group."
  2. Give your Group a name and describe its mission (what your Group is all about).
  3. Select the Group's privacy level. A public Group is listed on your profile for everyone to see. A secret Group is unlisted and known only by its invited Members.
  4. Decide who can apply to join the Group: open (anyone can apply) or by invitation only.
  5. Decide how to evaluate the applications of Members who want to join the Group, for example, no approval required, majority approval by Group Members, or sponsorship by Group Members.
  6. Click "Add".

Now that I've created a Group what should I do?

Answer: A bunch of things.

Click on your Group. Look at the "My Group Tools" section in the sidebar. The first thing you should do is to invite some Members to join your Group (a group of one is rarely interesting). Then start a new discussion. Let the Group hear what's on your mind. Challenge them. Encourage them to respond. Later on you can poll your Group, create an Event, or start a Campaign.

What's an Event and how do I create one?

An Event is any reason for your Group to get together, such as a lecture, a group dinner, or a charity walk. To create one, select "Events" from a Group's tabs. Then select "Create new Event." Provide the basic event information including a

  1. Name, Description
  2. Location: where the Event is occurring
  3. Web Site: for additional information about the Event
  4. Date, Time, and Duration

Click the "Add" button and you're done. The Event is listed on the Group's "Event" tab.
