The Running of the Fools (An Endurance Run for Sarcoma Cancer Research)
So have you heard? On April 4, Brian and Dan will be teaming up to run the American River 50 Mile Endurance Run in Sacramento, CA.
Why would ANYONE run 50 miles? Well, for starters, it’s cheaper than therapy. But even better, it gives us an excuse to raise money for a forgotten corner of the war on cancer: sarcoma research. Subjecting our bodies and minds to a few hours of agony may be challenging, but it’s NOTHING compared to what thousands of people go through every day fighting the ravages of cancer.
This is Brian’s first long race since he completed the Box of Chocolates Marathon in July, 2005. At that time, he was recovering from a lobectomy (lung lobe removal – not to be confused with a lobotomy) and chemotherapy to cure synovial sarcoma. Take away a lung lobe and of course, the obvious answer is to ….run farther. As Forest Gump said so well: “stupid is as stupid does.”
For Dan, the fear of attempting a 50 mile run is what drew him to the challenge. Dan likes to say that “rattling your own cage is good for the soul.” People who know Dan like to say, “He has a few screws loose.” Regardless, he is an avid long distance runner and lately is prone to eating obscene quantities of food given the training regimen. Like Brian, Dan hopes this 50 miler will in some small way help those battling the far greater challenge of cancer.
We thank you, from the bottom of our foolish hearts, for your generosity. We of course understand that times are tough. But while we have no control over what happens to the economy, we do know that our contributions can make a real difference for thousands of sarcoma patients now and into the future. On behalf of all of them, we thank you.
Brian & Dan
